If you are a normal person like most of us, you probably don’t want to switch on your camera in your virtual meetings. You would rather put up slides and talk behind the scenes. Below are the top 3 reasons why you need to come out of that mindset and turn on your camera during online meeting when you are working from home.

  1. It makes you look cowardly

When you don’t switch on your camera, it makes you look like you are afraid and you are okay if people ignore you. You are practically encouraging people to read emails, use mobile phones and check Facebook.

2. It isn’t helping your audience

Body language is an important part of communication. So you need to show your face because face is more expressive than your voice alone. Your audience will be much more connected to you and listen more carefully to what you are saying.

3. It isn’t helping you in the long run

It might be easier for you to just use your voice in the meetings. You need not fix your hair or change your clothes or work space, but you need to understand that as a speaker it is your responsibility to make the audience understand your message. Nobody cares what is easy for you. You need to keep your audience in mind before taking any decision related to meeting set-up. Initially it might not look like a big deal, but if it isn’t helping your audience understand your message, then after a while people will see through that.

So, yes you need to show your face in online meetings if you want to look proficient, self-assured and professional.
